The Dynatones
For almost four decades, The Dynatones were an
innovating force that helped shape the modern sound of
polka music so prevalent in the genre today. One of the
first polka groups in America with a contemporary
"edge," the unique musical approach of this band—
combining traditional melodies with modern rhythms
and the showmanship of frontman Scrubby—quickly
became its trademark.
The Dynatones were formed in 1968 in Buffalo,
New York by drummer/vocalist Larry Trojak and
trumpeter/reed man Jim “Whitey” Ryniec under the
original name, The Casinos. Shortly after, they were joined
by accordionist Joe Grenda, bassist Rich Walczak,
concertina player Dave “Scrubby” Seweryniak and
trumpeter Jan Cyman. After several personnel changes and
an opportunity to record on the prestigious Bel-Aire polka
label, the band's name was changed to The Dynatones.
The band released that first album, “Introducing
The Dynatones” (which has since been released on CD)
on Bel-Aire Records in 1969, and went on to compile an
impressive discography of nearly twenty recordings.
In 1981, The Dynatones became the first
contemporary Polka group to record a true “live” album.
“Live Wire” (WRS-World Renowned Sounds Records)
went on to win multiple awards, and is still regarded as
the benchmark by which all “live” contemporary polka
recordings are measured.
Many of the songs on “Live Wire” (Zosia, Boys
From Chicago, Red Shoes) as well as others played in
live performances throughout the country (Dorotka, Raz
Dwa Trzy, Congratulations, My Krakowianka, The
Moonshiner) have since become not only signature
tunes, but also recognized standards in the polka field.
In 1992 the band was honored with a Grammy
Award nomination for its album "When the Band Plays a
Polka." Throughout their existence, The Dynatones
received over 50 awards from the United States Polka
Association, International Polka Association and other
musical and media organizations for accomplishments
ranging from Best Instrumental Group, to Best Male
Vocalist, to Best Song, to Best Album.
Following the departure of Trojak in 1989 and
the 1999 retirement of the band’s charismatic front
man/vocalist/concertina player Scrubby, the band
continued to record and retain a strong following,
fronted on stage by Dynatones veteran
trumpeter/vocalist/leader Mark Trzepacz.
In August of 2012, some of the band’s most
popular and closely-identified members – Larry Trojak
(Drums/Vocals), Dave "Scrubby" Seweryniak
(Concertina/vocals), Mark Trzepacz (Trumpet/Vocals),
Al Piatkowski (Accordion), Dave "Nigel" Kurdziel
(Bass) and Rob Piatkowski (Trumpet) – will be reuniting
on stage for the 2012 Frankenmuth Summer Music Fest
in Frankenmuth, Michigan, performing on August 10th
and 11th.
